SUBFIX @ Smartbar: DJG (7/15) + Interview + Mix
Posted by Freshkid | Filed under Events, Live Show, MP3, Mixes, Subfix
This Thursday we see the return of DJG, one of the first to have played the event that has now evolved into the Subfix weeky. You can catch him this week at Smartbar alongside city mainstays Searchl1te and KabZ. Known as much for killing it in the mix as he is for his talents as a producer, we got a chance to fire a few questions his way in anticipation this weeks appearance:
FK: The last time you were in Chicago was 2008, what all has changed for you as an artist in that time?
DJG: Chicago 2008 was actually my very first gig out of town, so I would say that has been a lot of evolution for me as an artist and in this genre. Obviously the sound has gotten bigger and perhaps more polarized. I think I have just attempted to make music that is maybe more personal in nature, and not follow trends or try to pander to any one. I like experimental music, I like innovative sounds and ideas, deeper vibes, but I also like dancing and so I try to blend all this stuff. Living in America where harder sounds are more popular, sticking to my guns creatively has sometimes felt like swimming upstream. But it always pays off because I really believe in what I do and it’s allowed me to connect with amazing people who are looking for different vibes like me.

TONIGHT! Dead Fame 18+ Dance Party Featuring D.I.M, Le Castle Vania, DZ and Midnight Conspiracy!
Posted by Freshkid | Filed under Events, Live Show
By Kate Dessa:
Custom Vibes, React, Members Only AV and Fresh-Kid.com are presenting a huge 18+ night with San Francisco-based DJ and producer DZ at the Bottom Lounge. The Canadian born producer has been creating
electronic music from jungle, hiphop and drum and now dubstep for over 15 years.
Highly influenced by his hip-hop experience DZ created his first mixtape in 1995 with mashups from the likes of the Beastie Boys, Run DMZ and Wu tang Clan. Three years later he and jungle DJ/close friend Threesixty came together to create record label “Badman Press” so the two could begin forming their own tunes.
“Badman Press” has become an extremely successful label representing artists such as Bombaman, High.Deaf, and M6. After creating the label, DZ was free to produce his own sound and he started to form his own drum and bass tracks. After a few only years at it DZ took a break from the music scene to spend time with his family, and it wasn’t until 2007 that he took the stage again.
After he heard the sound of dubstep there was no stopping him from creating some of the most heart pounding buildups and heart stopping drops. His songs utilize the subs and create unexpected sounds that keep heads bobbing all night. 2008 was the year for this heavy weight when he began to make constant releases, while booking shows every weekend, with nothing but mass appeal. Now DZ has traveled the world playing his tunes and witnessing the instant rush dance floors get as his music booms through the speakers. DZ can now be seen on Wu Tang Clan tracks himself and artists such as Diplo and Rusko have been
heard rinsing his creations.
For his stop in Chicago, DZ will bring nothing less than brain melting
performance. Along side him for the night is Chicago’s own Phaded and
Nameloc. The two will be throwing some filth on the floor to get dubsteppers to get down to prior to DZ’s performance.

6/17 SUBFIX @ Smartbar: Mala (of Digital Mystikz)
Posted by Freshkid | Filed under Events, Live Show, Subfix
By Kate Dessa
Mala, known as one of the godfathers of dubstep, is crossing the ocean to make his first appearance in Chicago. Subfix Thursdays at Smartbar is bringing yet another European dubstepper to tickle the ears of the bass-biased listeners.
The Digital Mistikz other half (made up of Mala and Coki) has been making jungle-influenced dubstep since the turn of the century. Mala, with a more trademark deep-dubby sound, is also one of the owners of DMZ records, along with Coki and Loefah. The three of them together have played an influential part in the success of dubstep in the last five years.
